Founded in 1980, Anaya Architects stands as one of Spain’s most critically acclaimed architecture firms, having received numerous awards from many national and international competitions and organizations. Its skill encompasses a wide range of work, including historical restoration, civil construction, unique projects that employ state-of-the-art technology, residential housing by public and private developers, sport centres, schools, and cemeteries.
Among the firm´s most notable recognition are the 1992 COAM Award and the 1995 GASLE Award, both in the category of restoration, as well as nominations for the 1993-94 III Biennial Architecture Award, Madrid´s 1999 XI Awards of the Local Government, the 2005 Asprima Award, and Madrid´s 2003 Annual Management Report of City Council. It also competed as a finalist for Madrid´s 1992 VII Awards of City Council and recently for the 2012 Asprima Award in the category of restoration.
The firm´s international first-prize winning projects include the Villa Thyssen in Madrid for Baron Thyssen Bornemisza in 1987, the restoration of the Goethe Institute in Madrid in 2003, a residential complex consisting of 4,500 apartments and urban infrastructures in Tangiers, Morocco in 2006, and a city for 60,000 inhabitants in Marrakech, Morocco in 2009.
Anaya Architects has undertaken various royal projects, such as the assembly of the Expositions for National Heritage held in Las Atarazanas de Barcelona in March 1992, initiated by His Royal Highness Don Juan de Borbón; the Palace of Velázquez in Madrid in September 1992, initiated by the King and Queen of Spain; Filippo Juvarra in the Royal Palace in Madrid in May 1994, initiated by Her Royal Highness the Infanta Doña Elena, which involved the recovery of two Halls and addition of a stairway to the Halls of Genoa intended as a space for nobility; and the exposition of tapestries and cartons by Goya in the Halls of Genoa of the Royal Palace in Madrid in April 1996, initiated by the King and Queen of Spain.
Anaya Architects has won numerous national awards for projects like the Pilgrim Hostel in Pereje, León, awarded by the Ministry for Civil Construction; restorative interventions in the Historical Centre of Muros, awarded by the Council of Galicia; the restoration of the Well of Cachón; the construction of two sport centres and an indoor pool; education facilities; centres for the elderly and a municipal cemetery, all received between 1983 and 2000.
Recent projects include the restoration of the Town Hall of Outes (originally built in 1929) initiated by the President of the Council, D. Alberto Nuñez Feijóo, in December 2011; and the construction of the Centre for Nautical Activities in the harbour of the Freixo, also initiated by the President in March 2012. The firm was appointed by the General Directorate of Coasts to construct a Seaside Promenade of Esteiro and by the Ministry of Interiors to construct a Civil Guard Headquarters.
